How It All Started…
We had such a great time talking with Matt and Jeanne Rue at Rue Farms Rustic Potato Chips. They have one of those neat and fun stories on how they got started in their business of making potato chips. About five years ago their daughter gave them a fryer as a Christmas gift. At first they had no idea what they would do with it. Finally, they decided one day to try some potato chips in it. Obviously, the very first batch of potato chips was a big hit!
The first batch of chips they sold was to an online farmer’s market in Champaign County, Ohio. The business took off from there. As the business grew they outgrew making these chips in their kitchen at home. They needed somewhere larger and a place that was also approved by the FDA. The chip making business found a new home at Mikesell’s Potato Chip Co. They were able to rent space from them to continue making potato chips. They now were able to make their chips and put them in small grocery stores and eventually they made it to the large retail stores like Whole Foods and Kroger. What an accomplishment! As they outgrew the rented space at Mikesell’s Potato Chip Co., they partnered with Martin’s Potato Chips in Pennsylvania to actually produce their chips.
They make six different flavors of rustic potato chips. We will start with the most popular flavor, Pink Himalayan Salt. Pink Himalayan Salt is the healthiest salt available. If you love chips but need to watch your sodium intake, give these a try.
The Backwoods BBQ flavor is Matt’s favorite. It has a great taste without being over powering! There is a story behind this BBQ flavor. Whenever Ma and Pa Rue would go down to the home place in Tennessee, they always took the scenic route. This route took them through the quaint little town of Hazel, Kentucky. They fell in love with a roadside BBQ pit called “Cole Bush.” Both of them loved their pulled pork! So they set off to make their potato chips with that they same great BBQ flavor as the pulled pork. Backwoods BBQ was born from their love of this pulled pork! Our whole family loved the Backwoods BBQ chips!
The third flavor, Dill Herb, resembles the taste of sour cream and onion. Sydney and I included the Dill Herb at a cookout we were having and they were a huge hit!
Their Sea Salt flavor is one that the “first time customer” usually chooses. Most everyone has heard of sea salt and it is a definite staple of Rue Farms Rustic Potato Chips. This is popular at family functions & reunions, grad parties and picnics.
Pink Himalayan Salt & Apple Cider Vinegar is the perfect combination of flavors. These don’t leave your mouth sore like some apple cider vinegar chips do. That is because they use lemon juice powder instead of citric acid! Great idea! We shared these at game day with family. They were a huge hit!
The sixth and final flavor is the Sea Salt and Pepper. This is Jeanne’s favorite of all their chips. If you love cracked pepper this flavor has your name all over it!
You will never find additives, preservatives or fillers in Rue Farms Rustic Potato Chips. They are also free of the eight major allergens and are non GMO. You will also be glad to know that they are gluten free. They use the freshest and finest russet potatoes and slice them a little bit thicker than your average potato chip. I love how crunchy their chips are!
When I asked them how many employees they had, I was shocked to find out it is just the two of them! For Matt, the favorite part of running the business is the challenges. He loves a good challenge like the different logistics that come along. For Jeanne, marketing and advertising are her favorite parts of running the business.
Blue Grass Festivals and square dances have been huge supporters of Rue Farms Rustic Potato Chips. They love to give back to the community and help local schools and businesses with fund raisers. They even let the fund raising events use their site for pick up (for those who are local) and this allows the schools/businesses to maximize the profit of 70%!!
You can visit their retail store at 3822 Springfield-Xenia Rd, Springfield, OH 45506. The are open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday – Saturday. You can also order online through Amazon.
They sell both large and small bags. If you order a case of 12 large bags for $40.00 or a case of 24 small bags for $30.00, you can mix and match the different flavors.
They have now expanded into several grocery lines in twelve states and they plan to keep expanding! Sydney and I love talking with small business owners who are making their dreams come true!
If you love a wonderfully tasting potato chip that is really crunchy and comes in a variety of flavors, you really need to give Rue Farms Rustic Potato Chips a try. They are oh-so-good! 🙂
