Calling all deli and sub lovers. This article is just for you! Sydney and I had the most amazing visit at Mike & Rosy’s Deli in Springfield, OH. They almost adjoin Wittenberg University and almost go hand in hand. Wittenberg University students and alumni love Mike & Rosy’s Deli.
Mike & Rosy’s Deli
Mike & Rosy’s Deli was established in 1977 and are located at 330 W McCreight Ave, Springfield, OH. They are open seven days a week for your eating enjoyment. Ty Wagner is the owner of the deli and was so wonderful to talk with. We really enjoyed speaking with him. You can see his pride in Mike & Rosy’s Deli and in Wittenberg University!
There is a really neat story behind Mike & Rosy’s Deli that Ty shared with us. When Ty’s dad, Mike, was about to come into the world his parents were heading to the hospital. They didn’t make it to the hospital. Mike was born at a corner gas station. The really neat part of this story is that when Mike Wagner turned 19 he purchased this same gas station where he was born at and built it into Mike & Rosy’s Deli. How awesome is this? We love neat stories like this one!
The inspiration for Mike & Rosy’s deli came when Mike Wagner was attending a University of Tennessee game. There was a sandwich shop near the university that served food. Mike thought that Wittenberg University could use a sandwich shop. So upon returning to Springfield, OH, Mike bought the old gas station and as they say, “the rest is history.”
Mike & Rosy’s Press Box (Bar Area)
Ty Wagner is the 2nd generation owner of Mike & Rosy’s Deli. They pride themselves on great tasting food and they truly appreciate their customers. They are on their third building expansion. The latest expansion was an opening of an upstairs bar. The bar portion of the deli opens at 3:00 pm Monday – Thursday. Fridays it opens at 2:00 pm and on Saturdays it opens at noon. On Sundays the bar is closed. They also serve pizza and wings after 3:00 pm daily.
So Many Sauce Choices!
Ty told us about was that they source locally. We love when businesses support other businesses!
A really neat thing that you will see at the deli is this really large display of hot sauces. This started with a handful of hot sauces for customers to look at while ordering their food. It has turned into a fun and neat thing that they do now. They keep adding to the display making it larger and larger! You can purchase the bottles of hot sauce also. They also rotate different bottles of hot sauce on the tables for customers to try. Such a fun and neat thing that they do for their customers!
Sandwich Time!
Mike & Rosy’s Deli is known for their steamed sandwiches. They are not toasted and they are not served cold. The sandwiches are steamed, which keeps them warm and soft. They are also known for building your own sub. All the sandwiches are made to order, so this allows the customer to make their own combination.
Mike & Rosy’s Famous Hoagie is also known as an Italian Hoagie. You can build your own, but it is pictured here with smoked ham, imported ham, salami, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers, vinegar & oil and is served on a white sub bun. Looking really good!
The Rueben has corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, thousand island dressing and is served on dark rye bread.
Next is a turkey breast sandwich and is pictured here with turkey breast, provolone, lettuce, tomato and is served on a wheat sub bun. Once again remember, you can order your sandwiches with just the ingredients you want on them!
You can’t forget about dessert! Look at this amazing slice of Eli’s Cheese Cake from Chicago. Pictured is a chocolate raspberry cheesecake. Oh my goodness! Yummy!
If you think Mike & Rosy’s Deli is only for lunch and dinner you would be wrong. They have a great assortment of bagels and breakfast sandwiches for breakfast.
Fun Facts
Mike & Rosy’s Deli has about 50 percent of their customers dining in and the other 50 percent carrying out. Lunchtime is the busiest time of the day for them. Fall is their busiest season. Not hard to imagine is that their busiest day is the Wittenberg Homecoming. 🙂
They have game day specials, daily specials, coupons and they love working with schools. They place great importance upon community and it shows in all they do!
We asked Ty what the hardest thing about operating the deli is and he said that everyday is different. There are so many moving pieces and there is really no consistency.
Mike & Rosy’s Deli is only closed 4 days a year. The restaurant is closed Easter Sunday, July 4th, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Wow! That is customer service for you!
You can follow Mike & Rosy’s Deli on Instagram. This is a great way to check out all the different food options. Beware though, it may make you hungry! 🙂
