When I was about 18 years old, my teeth started moving around. Some moved towards the back, allowing others to come way too far forward. I just recently finished cutting my last set of molars!! I know, ridiculous at my age! Might be why my teeth started moving around so late. I love to smile, but hate my teeth. People would point out my “vampire fangs”…so I knew it was noticeable beyond me just being self conscious about it. The older I got, my teeth seemed to move about even more. I would look at pictures and just hate my smile. I got to the point where I liked getting pictures taken at an angle on one side because my teeth aren’t quite as crooked on that particular side.
One of the worries that I have with getting braces is the fact that it will make me look younger. I struggle with looking younger than I am already. Everyone still thinks I am in high school! I just know that adding braces to the equation will probably not help things at all. Two years ago, I was buying a pair of shoes for my wedding and the cashier asked if they were for my prom. Around that same time, I was shopping at a party supply store for our wedding reception items and another family came up and said, “We are shopping for my son’s high school graduation party too!” If people think I’m in high school without braces, how young am I going to look once I get the braces on? I am told over and over that when I hit about 40 I will be so glad that I look way younger than I am! I certainly hope so!
Fast forward to the present. I am 25 years old and finally got my braces put on! I was ecstatic when I made the phone call to Beavercreek Orthodontics to set my appointment. 🙂 I’d been waiting for this for the past seven years.
Even though I was excited I also felt a little nervous about joining the “adult braces club”; being an adult with braces isn’t exactly “the norm” in the USA. Most of the time, if a child doesn’t have braces put on between ages 8-15, you feel like you are way behind in your orthodontic care. Just walk into the upper elementary or middle schools…braces are everywhere. And here I come, 25 years old and just starting my orthodontic journey. I definitely feel out of place…but I know in the end this will all be worth it! I also know I will be so glad to have been part of this unique club!
My appointment day finally arrived! I signed myself in at the front desk and then sat down in the waiting room. Kids surrounded me! I definitely was not in the majority. One of the employees shared with me that one in five patients is an adult. Whew! That made me feel a little better. Go me!
In the waiting room, there is a huge drink station open to patients and their families. So many offerings! Coffees, teas and even Slushies. I’m sure those Slushies feel great when your mouth is aching from the braces! Also in the waiting room is a really neat kids area. It has a low countertop with short stools and has tablets to entertain them while they wait. Such a cool idea! I kind of wish I was a kid now. 🙂
My name was called and I went back to finalize the financial piece of this journey. After that was all taken care of…it was finally time! I was getting braces on! No backing out now! I went back to the exam area. No confining rooms in sight…everything was open and in one big space. There were dividers to allow for some privacy, but everything was light, airy and not boxed in at all. I felt very relaxed in the environment that Beavercreek Orthodontics created.
Everyone was super nice too! They explained what all was going to happen before they ever picked up a tool. I was asked several times if I had any questions at all throughout the entire process. I felt very taken care of.
The fun part came when I got to choose the band colors! So many options! I ended up choosing bright pink since spring was on its way.
I was there for probably an hour and a half and I was finished! As I left I was given a goodie bag with all the cleaning supplies for my braces and I was on the start of this new journey! I was definitely sore; that cheek retractor is quite the device, but not the most comfortable thing in the world. The braces are on now and I am on my way to a better smile. My treatment will last for about 18 months.
Kind of neat that my technician and I both have red hair! Not relevant to this article, but still pretty neat. 🙂
So some questions for all of you. Has anyone else dealt with braces as an adult? Has anyone else been married while wearing braces? What did your spouses think? I would greatly appreciate any thoughts or suggestions! It would be nice to know I am not alone in this journey! 🙂
