This is one of those really fun articles to write because the history of the restaurant is present in everything that Savoy Restaurant does and offers to their customers! Savoy Restaurant is located at 6033 S Sheridan Rd in Tulsa, OK. It was established in 1918 and was under the name Kelamis Café. It is now on the 4th generation and is celebrating its 100th year of service in 2018! How awesome is this? Nick Kelamis started the business and handed it down to his son Tom, who handed it down to his son Bill, who is currently preparing to retire and leaving it to his son Evan. We love stories like this! We got to talk with both Bill and Evan and they were generous to share their history, love and passion for their business with us.
Sydney and I were here for lunch and were amazed at the number of people who kept coming in. It didn’t stop. Evan said in any given week they will average somewhere around 3,500 customers. This is astounding since they only serve breakfast and lunch! We asked Evan what they attribute to 100 years of such a successful business. He said that they only offer excellent food (most all is made from scratch), great service and owners who care about the customers. They will choose the customer over the dollar every single time!
Look at the extensive menu options! How does a person choose what to have? Trust me it was hard!
Their most popular breakfast item is their homemade cinnamon rolls. Quality ingredients, a lot of effort and quite a bit of time is what makes their cinnamon rolls so delicious and popular. The dough is made on day one and left to rise. On day two the cinnamon rolls are prepared and baked. It is a two day process (this explains the effort and time). Bill said that they sell around 1,000 cinnamon rolls per week. Wow! Sydney and I can vouch that these cinnamon rolls were beyond excellent!
I decided on the special of the day which was meatloaf. It had this sauce on it that was so good, a little tangy and a little sweet. Absolutely the perfect marriage of flavors! The green beans and tomatoes were also very good. The homemade dinner rolls literally melted in your mouth! Sydney had the chicken fingers and homemade chips. They were delicious also. That is the great things about eating with someone you know, you are always getting to try their food also! 🙂
Their daily lunch specials all sounded really good. Evan said without a doubt that Thursday’s lunch special is the most popular with their customers. They love the roasted turkey and sage dressing. Remember, the customer is always right! 🙂
One of the things that really stood out to us was that Bill and Evan knew and called many of the customers by name. This lets you know when you have a good thing going. The customers come back so often that the owners and staff know them by name! Watching the exchange between the friendly staff and the customers was really enjoyable and spoke volumes. It is easy to see why Savoy Restaurant is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. It is the combination of great food and great customer service! Even Sydney and I could see this and it was our first time there.
Currently Savoy Restaurant employees around 30 people. Along with managing the restaurant, Bill and Evan sell some of their menu items in frozen, packaged form. You can drop in and get some cinnamon rolls, pecan rolls, sausage casseroles, biscuits and other items from their freezer to take home and enjoy. This would be perfect for parties!
Evan shared with us that they are now offering a catering side to their business. They cater weddings, corporate events and parties just to name a few examples. You really should check out their catering if you live in the Tulsa, OK area.
If you ever get an opportunity to be in the Tulsa area you really need to make it a point to stop in and have a meal at Savoy Restaurant (and make sure you try one of their delicious cinnamon rolls).
Have a great day everyone!
