Sydney and I had such a great time visiting Rollies in Marysville, OH. What a fun and unique ice cream shop! We met with the owners, Tommy & Donny, a young married couple. They shared that they were visiting New York City when they came up with this crazy concept to bring rolled ice cream to Marysville.
It wasn’t too crazy of an idea because the end of May marks their 1 year anniversary. They have been busy from the moment they opened their store! Opening day had lines formed down the sidewalk and winding through their store for a taste of this craziness called Rollies! Six months after opening the Marysville location, they opened a second location in Westerville, OH.
Between the two stores they have 30 employees. Donny said that they love to hire the younger generation to work in their stores. High schoolers and college age students make up the majority of their staff.
As you can see, the younger generation also loves to visit Rollies. Logan and Kayla were enjoying their Rollies Ice Cream while we were there. Logan ordered the Tom & Berri and Kayla ordered the Nutty Buddy. The Tom & Berri consists of raspberries, blackberries, dark coco drizzle, coco chips, blackberries and whip cream. The Tom & Berri is Donny’s personal favorite! The Nutty Buddy consists of peanut butter, animal crackers, peanut butter drizzle, Nutella, Reese Pieces and whip cream. Both of these looked amazing!
Donny started Sydney and I off with a couple of their boba teas. We had the Classic Milk Tea and the Taro Milk Tea. Donny said that one of the questions they get frequently is “What is boba?”. She said they are tapioca balls (aka bubbles or pearls). The tapioca balls are gluten free starch. They have the consistency of a chewy gummy (this is mainly for texture). She shared that milk teas and fruit flavors are among the most popular boba teas. These were really good! You can order your boba tea in a light bulb container. So fun and cute! The Classic Milk Tea and the Taro Milk Tea are their most popular boba teas. If you have never tried a boba tea you really need to. They are just so much fun!
Speaking of fun, here comes some more Rollies Ice Cream for you. Sydney and I had their Flavor of the Month – Cookie Monster. It had cute marshmellow eyes and even came with a chocolate chip cookie! It was delicious. It had a fruity flavor. We assumed it was blueberry, but Donny said that they made up this particular flavor themselves.
Tommy and Donny said that their ice cream is so good because they make the cream in house daily. They don’t even have a freezer! Their never frozen ice cream is made in the store, right in front of you as you watch. They always use the freshest of ingredients that are sourced from multiple countries.
This process originated from Thailand. Instead of storing the ice cream in a traditional freezer, they pour the cream on a cold plate. This cold plate has a freezer underneath that is kept at 20 to 25 degrees below freezing. They pour the cream onto the cold plate and “stir fry” until it is ready to be flattened out for rolling. This process is called Thai rolled ice cream. The neatest part of this is that you can watch them throughout the whole process! You literally watch them “make” your ice cream. How cool is this? 🙂
YOLO is their most popular ice cream. YOLO stands for “You Only Love Oreos!” Now it is easy to understand why it is the most popular! YOLO consists of Oreos, yolo pocky, cocodrizzle and whip cream. This is Tommy’s personal favorite!
The ice cream is completely gluten free (just make sure the toppings you choose are also!). The boba teas are dairy and gluten free. Not too surprising to find out that the ice cream is their biggest seller. On colder days you can find anywhere from 50-90 customers going in and out of Rollies. When warm weather rolls in, as you would expect, Rollies will serve upwards of 300 customers daily.
Each month there is a flavor of the month. April was Cookie Monster. May will be Unicorn Fairy (which is a cotton candy flavor) and June will be Peach. We asked which flavor was the most popular with kids. They both laughed and said “Whatever is the most colorful!”. They have 10 signature flavors or you can have their ice cream artists build you your own.
Rollies has a rewards program. 2 points for every ice cream you purchase and 1 point for every boba tea you purchase. When you have accumulated 20 points you get a free item!
Their hours are 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm with extended summer hours. The address for their Marysville location is 125 S Main St, Marysville, OH 43040. The address for their Westerville location is 79 S State St, Westerville, OH 43081.
The next time you are in the mood for something a little different check out Rollies. You will be glad you did! 🙂
Have an awesome and sweet day!
