Ok, let’s take a moment and get real. We all have that thing we love from the past. Whether it is from our childhood, teen years or a little later. We have something that we love from a certain time period. Mine is the Gilmore Girls. I love this tv series! I can watch it over and over again.
Currently, I am watching the series on Netflix. I have the dvd collection (I know, surprising huh?) but it is much easier to watch on Netflix because there is none of that disc changing thing (did I mention that I am lazy too!). There are 7 seasons of this series. Seriously, if you have never watched the Gilmore Girls you are truly missing out!
The series is based around two characters. Lorelai is a single mom (and is very independent) who is raising her extremely smart daughter, Rory. Rory’s life-long dream is to get into Harvard and Lorelai will do anything to help her achieve her dream. As the first season unfolds, you learn that Lorelai is the manager of The Independence Inn and Rory is 16 and has just been accepted into a very expensive and elite private school.
There are a couple of reasons I am drawn to this show. The first is that it takes place in a small town called Stars Hollow in Connecticut. I live and breathe small towns and I love everything about it. There is Luke’s Diner, the little shops, grocery store, bookstore, etc. The townspeople all know each other and support each other. The town is also always holding events and festivals. The show truly encompasses everything that small town living is. It just makes you feel good when you watch it!
The second reason I am drawn to this series is because Lorelai is the complete opposite of myself. She is very easy going (at points you will think too much, but that is part of the attraction), quick witted, and talks 100 miles per hour about random stuff. Her life is very unstructured and she is always going with the flow. I envy this (up to a point!)!
Lorelai and I do have a few things in common though. Her extreme love of her daughter, her desperate need for all things coffee, and her pride in her small town.
If you are a book lover like me, then you may be drawn to the story line because of Rory’s ferocious appetite of all things books! She is always reading. She loves to read and discuss books. Her love of reading makes you want to grab a book and start reading.
The fans of the show have even come up with a Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge. There are 339 books listed in the reading challenge. The list is comprised from the 339 books that were either read or mentioned throughout the 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls.
Here is the list of books for the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge:
Rory Gilmore’s Reading Challenge
I have decided to make my way through this massive list of books! Never have I done a reading challenge like this! It is a little intimidating if I am being completely honest (sshh, don’t tell). I am actually going to start with the very first book (don’t know why, I guess it just seemed like the right thing to do). Other than this first book, I will not be reading them in any kind of order. Just what sounds good or what I am in the mood for at the time. I will also be inserting other books that I want to read in between the challenge books. I know myself and I will see or hear about a book and just want to read it right now! Sydney will not be joining me in this challenge. She does not like to read much at all. It has to be a book that really catches her attention. Then she might read one book a year. 🙂
The first book that I am reading is 1984 by George Orwell. I picked it up, along with a couple of other books on the challenge list, from Jay & Mary’s Book Center in Troy, OH. I try to “SHOP LOCAL” whenever I can.
Sydney’s husband, who was an English major in college, had a few more books that were on the list that he let me borrow. Thanks Austin! I am now set to begin the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge.
Aside from all the reasons I love this series (and Sydney also loves the Gilmore Girls, if I forgot to mention it, oops!), I promise you if you give this series a try you will find your own reasons (and hopefully a couple of mine) as to why you love this show.
Have a wonderful day, and try and catch at least a couple of episodes of the Gilmore Girls! 🙂
